Satellite internet FAQs
How does satellite work?
Eutelsat terminals are installed by authorised installers at your site. Each terminal consists of a small dish installed outside at a carefully selected position to ensure it has a ‘clean’ path between the dish and the satellite. The dish connects via a coaxial cable to the satellite modem installed indoors, delivering internet access via its ethernet port(s). The satellite ‘relays’ signals in the Ka-frequency band, between the Eutelsat terminal and an earth-station in Italy, ‘connecting’ the Eutelsat terminal to the internet.
Who is this service for?
What is Eutelsat?
Eutelsat is a high-speed internet access service delivered via Satellite by Vox.
How fast is the Eutelsat broadband service?
Where is it available?
Satellite internet is available throughout South Africa.
How big are the satellite dishes?
The further a customer is located away from the centre of the spot beam (where signals are the strongest), the weaker the signals become. For sites towards the edges of the beams, we compensate for the ‘weaker’ signal by using a larger dish*. The 2 dish sizes that can be deployed are: 74cm and 98cm. *a stronger Watt transmitter may be required
I already have a DSTV dish, do I still need a dish from Eutelsat?
Yes. The Eutelsat system requires a unique dish in order to send and receive information via satellite. You cannot use your DSTV dish for Eutelsat high-speed Internet service.
How long will it take for satellite to be installed?
Installation lead time is 15 - 20 working days after your order has been captured successfully.
What hardware is included in the Satellite packages?
The Fair Usage Policy (FUP) will be implemented on uncapped Satellite packages according to the soft cap limits. Should utilisation reach a percentage of the allowed bandwidth threshold, the speed will be limited to a percentage of the contracted speed. Here is how the FUP would work on each package:
- 5/2Mbps: First throttle: speed will be reduced to 1Mbps after 100GB has been used. Second throttle: speed will be reduced to 512kbps after 200GB has been used.
- 10/3Mbps: First throttle: speed will be reduced to 2.5Mbps after 200GB has been used. Second throttle: speed will be reduced to 1Mbps after 300GB has been used.
- 20/3Mbps: First throttle: speed will be reduced to 5Mbps after 200GB has been used. Second throttle: speed will be reduced to 2Mbps after 300GB has been used.
- 30/5Mbps: First throttle: speed will be reduced to 10Mbps after 200GB has been used. Second throttle: speed will be reduced to 4Mbps after 300GB has been used.
- 50/5Mbps: First throttle: speed will be reduced to 15Mbps after 200GB has been used. Second throttle: speed will be reduced to 5Mbps after 300GB has been used.
